Prompt
The prompt is to build a game in one week that captures the essence of “fun”. This game is built for the "lightening round" for course Building Virtual Worlds.
Challenges
- Designing a Co-op game without networking
- Rapid prototyping a complete experience with intro and score board in a week
- Curating specific moments of excitement and competency during game play
What Did I Do?
As A Producer:
- Managed the scope to make sure the game can be developed within 1 week
- Organized and collected feedback from playtesters
- Facilitated the brainstorming of the game
As A Designer:
- Designed the theme and mechanics of the game
- Tweaked the mechanics with the programmers to make the interest curve of the game is not flat
Creating "Fun"
When we saw the prompt and the time we had, the idea of creating an arcade based on feeling of competency stood out to us immediately.
We were also interested in using the HTC Vive Trackers in a way that allows players to free their hands when they are playing the games. Attaching the trackers to either waist or ankles became our first option. Then, it came to our mind that we could easily create a multiplayer game with the Vive Trackers without computer networking, if we simply attached one tracker to each person. This became the direction that we were heading, and we were excited about the fun created from the way the players interact with each other.
Now we just needed a theme or a story for it. Because of the time limit, we decided to drop the story aspect and focus on the theme. The game was themed around a hot dog shop featuring a two-headed hot dog. Combining an co-op arcade game with a fun character pushes the fun factor to another level
